Practice Polygraph Exams

There is NO technical difference in the testing procedure between a "Practice Test" and a standard "Polygraph Exam." To whom test results are distributed, if at all, determines what they are called. If the results are favorable, the "Practice Test" usually becomes the "Polygraph Exam", and the examinee does not disclose that he intended for it to be practice test. This category was created for two reasons.

First, and most importantly, to assist individuals who are truly innocent of any allegations, but are intimidated, or just plain terrified at the thought of taking a polygraph exam (lie detection test.) In most cases, they want to prove to someone they are not guilty of an accusation, but feel their nervousness may get the best of them.

In other cases, they heard negative things about lie detection tests, and they want to experience the test, through a private examiner, before agreeing to sit for the police or government examiner.

For example, we had a case where a teenager was accused of stealing a car stereo from a neighbor's car, and claimed he was not guilty. Detectives told his parents, their son should come in for a polygraph exam, if he wants to be taken off the suspect list. The son told his parents he was innocent of the allegations, and had no problem taking the police polygraph. His parents however, felt uneasy about polygraphs in general, and contacted us. We gave their son a specific issue theft test, and he passed. The following week, he took and passed the police polygraph.

Secondly, the term "Practice Test" helps deter clients from suggesting they really need to pass the test, and hint at paying additional fees to insure they pass the polygraph. This eliminates most of this activity, and creates an opportunity for someone to take a polygraph test before involving others.

Pre-employment "practice" tests are more or less, just that. Police and government agencies advertise in job announcements, that a polygraph exam will be included in the hiring process. The process is slow and often an emotional roller coaster for the applicant. Some applicants want to know how they will do on a pre-employment polygraph, and seek our services before applying to the advertised position.

Favorable polygraph exam results from a private examiner are good indicators of favorable results with police or government examiners. And vice versa. Most examiners, police and private, follow the same guidelines and procedures.
